Olive Oil, as you now know, originated from the Lands of the Phoenicians. As I narrated previously, my earliest childhood memories include my dad dripping warm olive oil in my ears. From weeping in pain to gazing with shocked calm at my smiling father, it wouldn’t take few minutes. This is how earaches were dealt with at home! Should the pain recur for more than 24 hours, it was then the visit to the doctor. In my cases, I don’t recall needing these visits. The warm olive oil did always the job.
Naturally, I raised my three children the same. Two drops of warmed olive oil in the painful ear, holding my babies still for two minutes, and here we go! (Recipe below). And guess what? I still do it, for myself. Most of the time, these earaches are due to cold. The olive oil warms the internal area, and soothes the inflammation.
An old Lebanese family remedy used by experience, for little did they know back then that olive oil has strong anti-inflammatory properties (Oleocanthal) that act like an Ibuprofen. So, yes, you can also use it to reduce other inflammation pain, even if chronic.
Olive Oil Beats Infant Colic!
Yes, you read right! Extra Virgin Olive Oil was always a savior at home when it came to my babies’ colic. That, I learned it from my good Lebanese friend Maria P., two weeks through the birth of my first child. She called for warmed olive oil, stripped my baby daughter, and went massaging her with it, gently but firmly. It calmed her down in no time. Since then, Olive Oil became my solution to what all doctors still find puzzling!

How to proceed in case of Colic
Keep handy a warm blanket and socks. Warm 2 Tbsp of olive oil. Pour it in a tea plate, and test its heat with the tips of your fingers. The oil should be warm enough to do its effects, yet not hot! The oil cools quickly so massage your baby at once and fast.
Start with the tummy, gently, and move onto the chest, underarms, and shoulders. You will start noticing how cold the skin feels under your touch as the olive oil seems to suck out the internal cold then warms the skin. Keep rubbing olive oil on until the cold “gets out”, for this is how it appeared to me every time.
This is something I learned when we got that Deep Tissue Massage in Tucson, the pros there has handy tricks. While massaging, cover the done areas with the blanket. Continue back to the tummy, gently down behind the knees and down the feet. These areas are quick to absorb the benefits of the olive oil.
Focus few seconds on the feet palms and between the toes, and quickly dress up the little feet with the socks. Go back to the tummy and rub gently, checking for any remaining muscle contraction. Usually, it should be all gone. Your baby should be soothing down by then.
Make sure you cover your baby while massaging with little exposure of his/her body to the room temperature.
Yes, you’ve read well. With three babies, close in age, I learned that massaging them with warmed Olive Oil after their evening bath, not only made them smile and giggle, but granted them a good night sleep, with little to no colic.
Extra Virgin Olive Oil Does Even More!
I have witnessed our good Lebanese villagers using Olive Oil to heal effectively insect bites, soothe skin rash, speed wound recovery, and calm sun burns.
They dipped their fingers in cool Olive Oil, and patted gently the affected area, covering it all, and leaving it to be absorbed.
Personally, I recommend using Corn Flour for skin rash, baby diaper’s rush and sun burns. Corn Flour mixed with rosewater makes an excellent soothing cream of immediate effect. P.S. My personal all-time treatment for these particular issues.
1 tsp Extra virgin Olive Oil + 1 tsp orange juice. Drink this mix on morning empty stomach. If your constipation is severe, replace the orange juice with 1 cup of warm milk.
Bloating, flatulence, upset stomach, heartburn and intestinal spasms
1 tsp of Extra Virgin Olive Oil; 3 times a day, before your meal.
Extra Virgin Olive Oil stimulates digestive enzymes, improves bowel movement, helps with high level of Cholesterol, reduces heart coronary disease, soothes sun burns, heals wounds, treats scars and stretchmarks, works as a skin natural emollient, helps with painful stomach ulcers, improves brain function…
Starting a Cold or Flu?
Don’t wait. Act at once to stop it with olive oil, lemon and garlic.
- Mash 1 clove of Garlic
- Blend it with 1/4 cup Extra Virgin Olive Oil
- Stir in the juice of half a lemon
- Consume it with salad
If you are brave enough, go ahead and drink it. The Olive Oil acts as an anti-inflammatory, the Garlic as a powerful antibiotic, and the lemon juice gives you the Vitamin C boost you need to fight the cold. This recipe is also recommended if you aim at preventing a cold or a flu. To consume not more than 3 times a day.
- Warm 1/2 tsp Extra Virgin Olive.
- Soak in a cotton pad, press it at the ear opening, and drip in 1 or 2 drops.
- Rub the still-warm oily pad on the area behind the ailing ear.
A Lebanese uncle of mine lived healthy and energetic past his 95 year of age. I can’t ascertain if his daily intake of Extra Virgin Olive Oil was the cause. One thing for sure, science has proven that daily intake of this unrefined Olive Oil lowers the bad Cholesterol, and reduces risk of heart attacks. I have seen relatives taking this natural health enhancer, from as little as 2 Tbsp per day to as much as my uncle’s recipe here:
- 1/4 cup of Extra Virgin Oil
- 1/4 cup Fresh Lemon Juice
- 1/2 cup fresh water
- Drink it every morning 1h before breakfast
Today, studies state that, because of our consumption of Extra Virgin Olive Oil, our Mediterranean populations “have longer life expectancy and lower risks of heart disease, high blood pressure and stroke, compared with North Americans and Northern Europeans.”
Use same recipe as above. It cleans and detoxifies your gallbladder, kidneys and liver.

Loosing your hair?
- Warm 4 Tbsp Extra Virgin Olive Oil,
- Mix it with 2 Tbsp Honey
- Add 1 tsp cinnamon powder
- Apply the mixture onto scalp and hair
- Massage for 5 minutes,
- Leave it for 15 minutes
- Wash it off.
Recommended 3 times a week. Works well to fortify thinning hair!
