Tuna Tomato Sauce for Pasta

Fragrant with Basil, Oregano, and a Zesty Sparkle

Today, the recipe comes in response to a couple of emails I received recently from regulars of my blog. I was asked for a pasta recipe of ours, and if we cook pasta in our cuisine.

Well, yes, we do, from Lasagna and baked pasta cheese to Chicken Nouilles and the simple pasta served with sauce or ketchup. That is in our households, and in our restaurants; open as we are to the world around us.

However, these are not Lebanese dishes or recipes, nor are culturally ours. Respectful to my fellow Italian food bloggers, I am leaving these typical dishes of the Italian Cuisine for them to share.

It remains that I am always open to listen to my readers and their requests. So I will be sharing here the Tuna Tomato Sauce (with its pasta) that my mother used to cook for us, and which I still cook at home, and often because we all love it.

It is an easy 10 minute recipe. It comes with a sparkle of lemon, and is fragrant with Basil and Oregano. The sauce itself takes less than 10 minutes, and I prepare it while the pasta is cooking. And the pasta to be perfectly cooked al-dente shouldn’t boil more than 10 minutes.

Let’s hope you will like it as we all do in my household in Montreal, and the households of my large family in Houston. 🙂

Have an enjoyable meal!

Prep Time 6 minutes
Cook Time 10 minutes
Total Time 16 minutes

  • 450 gr Macaroni pasta cooked al-dente (10 minute boiling only)
  • 1 tbsp Butter

For the Sauce

  • 2 cans Flaked Light Tuna in water (130g each) Drained from its liquid
  • 7 tbsps Tomato Sauce with fine herbs
  • 1 tbsp Tomato Paste
  • 1 Onion (small) chopped finely
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 tsp Lemon Pepper
  • 1/2 tsp Dry Basil or as desired
  • 1 tsp Oregano
  • 1 tsp Fresh Lemon Juice
  • Salt to season further if desired
  • 3 tbsps Olive oil to cook

  1. While your pasta is cooking, prepare the sauce as follows:

Warm the oil in a saucepan over medium heat, and cook the onions for 2 minutes until they wither.

Lower the heat to Medium-Low, and add the flaked tuna. Toss for 5 seconds, and decrease the heat to Low.

Stir in the tomato sauce, the pasta sauce, and the water. Season with the herbs and the Lemon Pepper, and allow it to simmer for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Turn off the heat, and sprinkle the lemon juice. Taste to see if you would like it saltier.

  2. When your macaroni is done, which should be any time now, pour it on a sieve (no washing), and return to its pan. Please make sure you have turned off the heat.

Drop the unsalted butter in, and stir for few seconds for the butter to melt and the macaroni to take in the butter.

Serve at once, and enjoy it!
